My Approach

For most women pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is the most physically challenging thing our body will ever go through. In our work together we will begin by creating a foundation of proper alignment and balanced strength. From there we will move on to gaining strength to carry the weight of pregnancy as well as stamina for the birth process. Towards the end of your pregnancy we will begin focusing on preparing for birth including pelvic floor exercises, birthing positions, breathing, and interval training that mimics contraction patterns. After birth our goal is to regain strength and to meet the physical demands of parenting. In the early days of recovery, regaining core strength and reconnecting with your bodies is our primary focus. I am honored to be a part of my clients care team and may recommend that you supplement our work together with pelvic floor physical therapy, massage, acupuncture, etc. so that you feel your best throughout this transformational time in life.

Pregnancy and Birth

During pregnancy our body changes drastically in a very short period of time. This can lead to discomfort and imbalance in the muscles. Strengthening our body can prevent pain, improve our overall health and the health of our babies, and help us feel our best throughout pregnancy. Some of the benefits of working out during pregnancy include reducing gestational diabetes, reducing risk of pregnancy induced hypertension, preventing injuries and pain, reducing nausea, heartburn, indigestion, swelling, and varicose veins, limiting the amount of excessive pregnancy weight gain, improving sleep, mood, energy, and self esteem, facilitating easier labor, and expediting postpartum recovery time. There are also benefits to our babies including improving placenta function, improving babies health at birth, improving babies ability to handle labor and recover more quickly, improving cardio-respiratory health of the baby even into childhood years, reducing risk of becoming obese as a child, and improving intelligence, language, and memory. Part of our work together will be practicing breathing and birth positions as well as mimicking contraction patterns so that your strength and stamina are ready for your birth experience.

Postpartum

The early days of parenthood are uniquely challenging. We are recovering from birth (either vaginal or c-section) and caring for our babies all while our body goes through another drastic change! Postpartum recovery begins with breathing, pelvic floor exercises, proper alignment, and slowly regaining strength. We begin by bringing attention to the core function and then start to attend to the rest of the body. This is a time of reconnecting with our bodies through a gentle tender approach. It is a time for us to tune into our physical strength needs in order to prevent injury from the physicality of parenting such as bending, squating, carrying, and lifting.
